Lithium and AGM - What's the story?

If you have been keeping up on your battery technologies, then you might find this article a tad elementary, but for the rest of us wondering what the difference is between Lithium Ion and AGM battery power,  here's a quick and NOT super scientific run down (At least as it relates to the Epic Amp)

Epic EV's mission is and has always been to make an affordable EV for just about anyone interested in becoming an EV owner. In these economic times, that's a tall order, but we believe it forces innovation in a space where the sky is the limit and provides options to the consumer.

If you look at our Amp options, you will see we offer two types of battery choices, AGM and Lithium. The price varies depending which type you choose. It doesn't really come down to pros and cons of each type of battery, it's more about what's right for you in terms of your style of driving and usage of the vehicle. Our pricing is set up so that you have the option of purchasing only what you need, or if you are an enthusiast, everything you ever wanted.

So lets talk AGM?

First off, what does the fancy acryonym "AGM" stand for? (Absorbed Glass Mat ) just in case you find yourself on "Jeopardy" or "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" and the question comes up.

These batteries create voltage using the time tested lead acid technology, but what makes them different from traditional lead acid batteries is that they utilize a glass mat and a valve that allows the battery to be inverted or in a negative G situation without spilling out the power producing electrolyte, this helps with all types of applications where the battery might need to be mounted in way other than right side up. The AGM battery also uses much less battery acid than a traditional lead acid battery.

Some additional advantages:

  • Can hold up to 1.5x more power than a traditional lead acid due to purer lead
  • Internal resistance is lower, allowing quicker charging and discharging
  • Operates in low temperature environments
  • Vibration resistant

AGM batteries supply 40KW of power to an Epic Amp, which will get you about 40 miles per charge.

Need more range? Then let's talk Lithium battery packs

Lithium Ion Battery Packs

The first Lithium based battery was developed in the 1970's and has undergone a lot of advancements since then. Lithium Ion battery technology is developing rapidly making Li-Ions the preferred battery technology for today's electric vehicles.

So what's the big deal?

A few advantages:

  • Much lighter than AGM type batteries
  • Higher power at lower current

These advantages mean that in an Epic Amp with the Lithium power pack, the total vehicle weight is 180 lbs lighter and has 3x the power of the AGM counter part doubling the Amps range.
